We had hours to go as we began our journey to our friend’s wedding weekend. The suitcases and shoes were in the car. All of the snacks for this road trip were packed and in a place easily reached from the front seat. Everything was double and triple checked.
Taking our anxiety to the car, we pulled out of the driveway.
It was an easy first couple of hours. Talking and laughing, we shared stories from way back when. It’s funny how you can be best of friends with someone and still learn so many new things.
Our friend was getting married in Ocean City. Two hours ahead of us, another friend and her boyfriend were almost there. Once upon a time, the four of us all taught together. We became fast friends because as anyone knows in a school setting, you need friends to survive the chaos. We hadn’t seen our friend in a very long time and the excitement was building.
Then we came to the bridge…. More specifically, The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which is the link leading from Virginia towards where we needed to go. Have you ever seen it? Been on it? Check out this picture!
Our anxiety about traveling just hit full scale as we realized this bridge didn’t seem to end. In fact, the length is 22,790 feet long! It’s a very long way from one side to the other with some tunnels to drive as well. And as we were dealing with all of this, we noticed the weather started to change…
On my driver’s side, the clouds were starting to move fast and it was getting darker. We could see some rain in the distance but it hadn’t reached us yet. On my friend’s side, there were some blue skies and it looked a lot calmer.
It was too late to turn around.
How much do we love our friend? We thought it was a lot before but it turned out to be so much more!
We survived the bridge and tunnel and made it to the other side. Traveling through flat farm areas, I decided I better get some gas before we didn’t see any more stations. Pulling over at the exact moment, the rain came pouring down, I hurried to put my credit card in the machine.
LOUD SIRENS STARTED COMING FROM INSIDE MY CAR!
My friend had a look that can only be described, as OH SHIT. A tornado warning wasgoing off of my phone signaling that we needed to take cover in the area.
As we panicked, I kept pumping the gas. I thought if a tornado lifted us up and deposited us who knows where, we would still need to get to Ocean City because you know, we really love our friend.
Now speeding through farm land, my friend started to google all we needed to do if we saw that funnel cloud. We nervously looked and as we drove pointed out all the places we could run or how we would take cover in the car.
There is nothing like panicking with a good friend. Also the snacks helped until they made us nauseous.
We seemed to fly in the car as if we were the wicked witch on her broom stick. Pun intended of curse.
Finally, the rain slowed down and the clouds started to look more normal. Taking deep breaths, we both looked at each other…relieved.
How much do we love our friend?
We would probably do it all over again.
How much? SO MUCH! Congrats, Mel!!! You were a stunning bride and the wedding will be forever remembered as one of the BEST times we ever had! Can we hashtag orange crushes? 🙂
Love, S, J, and C.
