Growing up, the best pet I had was a fish. The second best, a newt. I was not allowed to have any fur animals. We lived in an apartment and it would have been a bit much to have a dog in it or at least that’s the excuse reason my mom gave us.
My dad tried to compensate with a pretend dog when we were young enough to sort of believe. Mostly we just got a kick out of my dad barking all the time and having imaginary conversations with it. Long live Brutus even if they told us he moved to Florida. My brother and I really think our mom got tired of the fake barking.
So when I moved out on my own, I was ready. Only I couldn’t have pets where I lived. Eventually along came my boyfriend and he could so we got a cat.
I will be the first to tell you I was never really a cat person. A coworker’s cat had kittens and my friend planned to take one and talked me into getting another. My boyfriend was all for it and we could keep it at his apartment. Mind you, this was back in the days of young love for us. So I got pretty much whatever I wanted.
Sigh. I miss those days.
Anyway, that is how we ended up with Kippi.
This cat made the move with us from NYC to NC. There have been many car rides back and forth between the states when she was young that she kept us company. She is always the first to greet me after long days at work. In the winter, she curls up on my legs through the night. When we went through the infertility world, she never left my side while I cried for hours. When I finally did get pregnant, she followed me around everywhere in the house as if to protect me.
When the first baby came, she was a bit unsure. By the time the second baby came, well she was probably still unsure to be honest. Now she realizes both kids although a bit crazy at times, spoil her with treats. I think she is happy she let us keep them.
These days after the kids go to bed, I curl up with a good book or a show and she is right there next to me. There is so much joy, comfort, and happiness because of her.
Kippi turns 13 on April 9 this year.
So much to celebrate!
