Growing up in the 80’s on a Saturday morning was one of the best experiences. Three words for you: Saturday morning cartoons.
This alone will bring a smile to anyone who lived their childhood those mornings like that but this post isn’t about the cartoons.
It’s about what happened after.
Chores. That’s what happened. But this post isn’t about that either.
Once the chores were done, I would meet one of my best friends after hers were finished and we would go out on the town. The town being about 4 blocks on either side long but still it was a very busy 4 blocks full of stores we liked to go in and out of. We would get our allowances from our moms and know that we could go out and spend it.
My absolute favorite place was the book store. Remember those? The one at the end of the blocks was Waldenbooks. I would read the back of so many books to see which one I wanted that week. Some weeks it was easier if a new one came out in a series I was reading or one just happened to grab my eye. My friend would patiently wait while I decided.
Walking away swinging my bag with a big smile on my face, she would announce we were going to our favorite pizza place.
Only I had just spent all of my money on a book. It’s not like I didn’t know it was coming but still…
We would walk in and the smell would hit me. For a moment, I would be sad and question my choice of getting a book.
Then my friend would order her corner Sicilian slice and order me a regular slice saying, “don’t worry. I got it.”
In case I haven’t told you lately, Dina..you rock!
I miss our Saturday morning strolls up and down Bell Blvd.
