It started out like any passionate relationship I suppose…a forbidden one. There is just something about secrecy and things that you cannot have which makes it all the more exciting.
Plus I was young and when one is young and in love, well you know. We find ways.
Stolen glances across the room.
A quick hand holding here and there.
The after work get away where no one could see.
Late nights of talking about anything and everything. All of our dreams of a getaway filled the car with hope.
Then, it all just went wrong.
The mysterious phone calls that left one wondering and the other jealous. The glances across the room became suspicious. Excuses were made and before we knew it, seasons changed.
There was a chill in the air that hadn’t been there before.
We agreed to one last meeting.
About a minute before he pulled up in his car, I got out of there. Hidden well behind the trees,I shivered. Then, I watched him wait for a long time before he drove off into the night.
I wondered if I would regret that moment that I chose not to move.
I thought about it all that week when he didn’t show up for work and no one heard from him. We heard rumors of different things but to this day, we never spoke again.
Sometimes I go back and replay all the moments that could have turned it around. The end probably would have been the same.
Such is forbidden love.
