The world scares me.
Every time the news is on, we see anger and hate. There is so much of it out there. You can argue that there is also good if we look for it, but it has become more difficult to find.
Terrorists. Shootings. Threats. Lockdowns.
These are words that are becoming more and more a part of our daily vocabulary.
I am a mom and an elementary school teacher.
Kids make my world go around. They make OUR world go around.
These amazing people are our light, hope, and future.
We need to make sure that they have one.
Do I know the right answers?
No.
I think to myself, what can I do? I can protect to the best of my ability. I can shield them from images from the media and talk louder when scary things are not for their listening ears.
One day they will grow older and find their way in the world without me always there.
How can I change the world to make it a better place? How can I prepare them?
Hopes, prayers, faith?
Yes.
Deep down, I know it is not enough.
All of us need to pay attention. Lead by example and show our children how to be leaders and team players. Surrounding ourselves with positive and good people should be a given. Do not settle for less. Investigating when something doesn’t seem right could make all the difference. Listening when a politician speaks and choosing our votes carefully is vital. We must ask questions that we may be afraid to ask. Above all, we should use our voices to bring change even if it takes all the courage we have.
We must start to take action that brings an end to so many senseless tragedies.
If we don’t, who will?
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of the terrible tragedy in California on 12/2/15 as well as the recent terrorists attacks in Paris.
