I grew up in Queens, New York which is about a 20 minute train ride from Manhattan. Our family lived in an apartment building that was surrounded by many more like it for about 4 or 5 blocks.
It was a candy gold mine for us trick or treaters.
We would run in and all of us would ring a door bell then run from each opened door to get our candy. Hours later, we would return with bags full and our faces smeared with chocolate. At that point, costume masks would be stuffed in there too. You know because back in the day those could suffocate you.
The kids in our neighborhood had the best times on Halloween.
This holiday is a bit different where I live now. Hello to suburban North Carolina. We have no fewer than a million kids in our neighborhood. Slight exaggeration but not by much. We buy a ton of candy and talk about what all of our children are going to dress up as. Adults here dress up too.
Everyone gets in the spooky spirit.
I LOVE dressing up and this is my favorite holiday so it was just perfect for me!
When I was growing up, we would go out as soon as we got home from school. Here, schools get out later and we go trick or treating when it is dark. It looks like scenes out of the movies with so many walking around with glow sticks and fancy trick or treat bag bags in their hands. I love looking at the themed blows ups on the lawns and seeing the different decorations. There is even a life size witch! Back in the day, we only saw what fit on apartment doors. Dare I say, it’s like a Halloween fairy tale for me?
Being a HUGE fan of this holiday, it was all so magical.
Wait… it gets even better. Here is what happens when we go around to the different houses here.
Trick or Treat?
Halloween Jello Shots?
Yes. True story. Some of my wonderful and awesome neighbors give that to the adults that are walking with their kids. They are amazing. Being a mommy of two really little ones, they always take pity on me and give me extra. (Do I get even more this year since I am giving a shout out??!!) *Readers, please don’t email asking for the address. We can’t have everyone going because there will be less for me to have.
Trick or Treat??!!
Full size candy bars?
I know the exact house (the ONE house) that gives those out every year. I never ever thought in my wildest dreams that would happen. (Yes, there can be wild dreams about things like this.)
Trick or treat?!
You can pick 1 out of every bowl that you see on this table.
Pick?? Pick what I want? Twizzlers AND chocolate?? Don’t mind if I do.
Trick or Treat?!!
Ohhh your kids are so cute. They can take extra for you to have too. Wink, wink.
My kind of people.
Holidays that bring you back to childhood and put a spell on your heart are truly those that create the best memories.
