Scene: In a doctor’s office where there are a couple of nurses holding me down along with my mom. One doctor is at the door making faces to try and get me to laugh while another is attempting to give me a shot.
I was 13 years old.
It was quite the disaster you can imagine. I am sure my mom must have gone home and drank…heavily. If not, she probably should have.
Truth is, I was never one for doctors. They scared the shit out of me growing up.
It was always a struggle for me not to cry or act out.
As I got older, I did get better. My last ear doctor in New York can tell you that I went from a red alert file to a model patient. I think it only took me ten years.
Thankfully, all of my doctors in North Carolina and I get along really well. This is awesome considering I have too many levels of anxiety and always strongly suggest they have fully stocked bars in their offices.
So now, doctor visits have evolved because I have…children!
My 4 year old LOVES his doctors. He thinks it is one big play date every time he goes and talks their heads off. When we pass by the offices on random outings, he even gets very excited to point them out.
My mom was not amused. She thought for sure I would get what was coming to me.
Me on the other hand, couldn’t believe my luck. The doctor visits were always easy even when there were shots. He would cry it out, smile, and wave goodbye to the nurses through tears. This kid would get his stickers, lollipops and demand to know when we would return. This mama had it good!
I should have known that the universe was not done with me.
Hellooooooooo to child number 2 who happens to be EXACTLY the way I was.
It started from the very first visit. All crying. She stares down the doctors when she does manage to get herself under control and let me tell you, she is quite scary. Now, all the nurse has to do is call her name to go in and she starts SCREAMING.
On a very recent trip to Urgent Care, she would have looked straight out of a horror movie if it weren’t for the fact of how adorable she is. The doctor tried EVERYTHING to get her to smile. It just wasn’t working.
I may have broken out in a small sweat while trying to calm her down so she could be examined. Finally, when the doctor was done and said goodbye, we got some smiles.
I realize that there will be years ahead of this.
And my mom just got her karma wish.
