I have been a Star Wars fan for as long as I can remember. My brother and I would watch the movies all of the time when we were kids. It’s a miracle those tapes didn’t break from all the rewinding we did. (Young readers, google VCR.) Check out how a couple of years ago, we even got each other the same Star Wars books for Christmas.
I get excited every time the marathon comes on TV. I should note that I am talking about the original Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
When I got pregnant, I started planning right away. My child would have the best of everything…light sabers, Star Wars Legos, and the best clothes with all of the characters on them. When I found out I was having a boy, the first Halloween costume was planned.
This was entirely up to me. Hubby is not such a fan. I know. I try very hard not to hold it against him either. He is a trekkie so he does have something going for him.
Little one was 5 months old when the first Halloween happened. I didn’t go with the Yoda costume because I decided it wouldn’t have the same effect if he wasn’t walking. It would have to be next year. Only then, he had sensory stuff going on and we didn’t get the costume. Same with the year after.
Then this happened a few months ago…
This is my awesome friend Jacqui’s son, Sam, who is 4 like mine. They started watching Star Wars with their kids. I was behind on life! It was time!
I got my son all pumped up to watch this movie and we did. Here is what happened:
- He asked a million questions.
- Then, a million more. I barely could watch the movie.
- He is stormtrooper obsessed. He really only wants to watch the parts that they are in.
- It is harder than I thought to explain the concept of the force.
- He may still be referring to a certain wookie as “that lion”.
Finally, he started getting more into it. We have watched all three now and the questions have not ended but he is excited to watch them over and over. Parenting success!
I asked him if he could be Yoda this Halloween. He didn’t even think about it. He just said no. Maybe hubby will have better luck dressing him up as Captain Kirk.
“ There is another…”
The force is strong with this one.
